Knowledge + Support = Success
Workshops are tailored to the individual needs of the group. They may be presented as educational in-service workshops for school nurses, teachers, administrators, cafeteria and auxiliary staff. EFFA also provides general awareness and educational sessions for parent groups to enhance their knowledge on this issue. EFFA is a registered provider of Professional Development Points with the Massachusetts Department of Education and meets the requirements of the Massachusetts Board of Nursing to provide Contact Hours for Continuing Education for nurses.
Course Name: FOOD ALLERGIES: AN OVERVIEW, IMPLICATIONS IN THE SCHOOL SETTING, AND A RECIPE FOR THEIR MANAGEMENT
Course Description:
Course will broaden the educator and nurse's knowledge of food allergies and their implications in the school setting and present a practical approach to their management. Topics covered will be:
1. An overview of food allergies (definitions/current statistics)
2. School management strategies, including risk reduction and response
plans throughout the school environment.
3. Interpretation of MA DOE Guidelines and MA DPH regulations on food allergies
4. State/federal laws and their implications
5. Review of current research on food allergies
6. Available resources and related services
7. Question ad answer exchange
Upon course completion, educators will have the tools, knowledge and skills to synthesize learned information into practical application and 1.) promote a safer environment for students with food allergies by employing proactive, non-intrusive protocols, 2.) educate students to enhance their personal health, 3.) positively influence relationship between health and school performance, allowing for optimal learning, 4.) improve communication between school and family.
Method of Instruction: Lecture w/ Power Point Presentation, Discussion, Information Packet

Teachers will receive a “Certificate of Completion”

Course Description:
Course will enable cafeteria staff to better understand food allergies and the ways in which a food-allergic reaction may occur. Recommendations are offered to reduce the risk of allergen exposure and cross-contamination in the cafeteria setting.
Course Description:
Course will cover current research on the emotional impact food allergies have on the food-allergic individual and their family, the ways in which each family member may react and why, and discuss healthy strategies to cope.
